This post goes along the same lines as yesterday's. Yes, people abuse their animals. But there are people out there who are devoted to rescuing the abused animals.

I was on the Care2 website today and I found a link to the IFAW Animal Rescue Blog. It is filled with information on the organization and all the good they are trying to do throughout the world. In other words, they keep you updated on their rescue attempts. Good stuff.

Animal Abuse Makes Me Sick

The other day, I watched a few minutes worth of an animal rescue show on either Animal Planet of discover. A few minutes is all I needed. It made me feel sick and sad.

They had rescued this cute dog with a playful spirit and a giant wound. The dog underwent surgery and pulled through.

For a moment, I felt happy. But it was short lived.

They said about a week later, the dog attacked one of the staff because of all he had been through, so they had to put him under.

What?

How do people justify being so cruel to animals. This dog was so fun, adorable, and spunky. :( He had such potential to be a good pet, but suffered psychological damage because their former owner was such a loser.

If you want to help do something about it, why not volunteer at the humane society, or make a donation?

Sustainable Business Practices

Do you run a business? Have you given it any thought how your business can make this world better? From a consumer standpoint, I know that I bring my business elsewhere when I hear of businesses doing things that are questionable for the environment.

As a writer, I try to make sure I am only helping those clients who are doing something positive. I will NOT do your homework or help you promote your business if I don't agree with your practices.

Nature.org - Conservation Website

I just found a website called nature.org that has a lot of information about things you can do to help preserve our natural environment.

A lot of things that we do have considerable impact that we may not realize, such as recycling. It is easy to think that our actions don't matter. But if everyone did their part, it could add up and make a serious difference.

Global warming is a problem ... yes ... but I try to do my part not necessarily because of that, but because it's just more respectful. I love nature and I want it to be there when I want to hike, go for a trail run, or enjoy a pretty view.

Visiting nature.org will help you get educated so you can also do your part.

Tips to Save the Earth

What can you do to save the earth? Saving the earth is everyone’s duty. All of us can contribute some effort to make a better tomorrow. If you do not know how to begin, follow these tips.

Turn off your light: When you don’t need it, it only makes sense to turn off your light bulb. If you have a regular incandescent bulb at your house, you should change it to a compact fluorescent bulb. Believe it or not, it is good to the environment, and it can also save you a lot of money. Although a fluorescent bulb may seem expensive, energy experts confirm that you will save more money with a fluorescent bulb long term. Even though incandescent bulb may be cheaper, it will burn out often. Furthermore, fluorescent bulb will only use a quarter of energy to generate the same amount of light.

Running faucet: Turn off the running faucet when you brush your teeth. Believe it or not, if you leave the water running for two minutes, you waste up to ten gallons of water.

Turn down the heat: If you must turn on the heater in the winter, you should set it at 135 degrees. Try to put on thicker blanket or jacket when you go to bed. You may not even need your heater.

Carry cloth shopping bags: Cloth shopping bags are better than plastic shopping bags for the environment.

Recycle: Recycle newspapers, plastic, cans, or glass. Learn about your local recycling facilities. Recycle whenever you can.

Alert your family about the environment: If you have children, you should teach them about recycling. Teach them to love the environment.

What Does it Mean to Be a Good Steward?

As people living on the Earth, we have a responsibility to respect and care for it. For me, that does not mean being perfect. It means doing what we can. If you recycle most of the time, bring your own bags to the grocery store, and in general try your hardest to be respectful of the environment and make conscious choices as a consumers, it makes more of an impact than you realize.

One thing that you can do every day is visit the Care2 website and make your daily clicks. There are also great articles and action steps for things that you can do to help the environment. I'm convinced that it is nearly impossible to do everything and be perfect. But if we try, that is what is truly important.

No Animal Testing

I'm saddened by how many companies test on animals. I don't believe in it - especially with cosmetics. So, I try to find skin care and cosmetic companies who do not test. That means that a simple trip to the drug store to buy makeup doesn't exist for me. I need to go out of my way. Here are some companies that I use and love:

Leave No Trace

I've been hiking a lot, and am careful about making sure I stay on the trails when I can. Obviously if the trail is not passable, I'll have to go into the woods a little. And sometimes the trail is hard to follow and I veer off by accident. But still, I try. I also make sure to take all of my garbage out of the woods and throw it away when I am done the hike in a proper trash recepticle.

It may not seem like much, but there are a lot of hikers, campers, and backpackers throughout the world who enter into the woods on a daily basis. If we all do this, it could really help prevent things like trail erosion and problems associated with wildlife getting a hold of your garbage such as dependency on human food and even death.

Stewards of the Earth is a new environmental blog with a Christian spin. But, you don't need to be a Christian to benefit from the content. It will contain ideas and inspiration for treating the earth with love and respect.
